I’ll put my cards straight out onto the table here guys – I think SEO is a load of crap. What little part of it works is so tenuous (search engines change their rules all the time) that it’s not worth doing.

There are far easier ways to get traffic.

This is just my opinion, and understanding of SEO.

Experts out there will tell you different. Try SEO – If it works for you come back and tell me. I’m still waiting to hear from anyone to take me up on this challenge yet.

When SEO first started out, it was all about using specific keywords, and an abundance of them, throughout your pages to get you a higher rank in search engine placement.

Now, it seems to be all about using those specific keywords and adding MORE specific keywords inside your website  pages generating “long-tail” search strings.

Eh?

Yeah. It is a bit confusing. So let’s start by explaining what, exactly, SEO is.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a method of using keywords and phrases which you put throughout your website pages (including meta tags) to try to get YOUR website pages listed as close to the top of the page in searches that people make on engines such as Google and yahoo as possible.

In essence, SEO is a method where you try and get your website listed on the first page of any  search engine search(because when people do internet searches they rarely go past the first page)

The position on the page? If you’re inside the top 5 or 6, you’re doing pretty well.

But, if you’re in the top 3, well, you’re doing extremely well.

And being inside the top 3, or even striving to be number one, is the main goal of SEO.

So, the “myth” is, if you got yourself at the number one position of the search engines, then you would most definitely increase your traffic, thereby increasing your profit margins.

What IS true is that if you were ranked number one, you MIGHT see an increase in the amount of traffic, or visitors, to your website.

What is MYTH is that just because you would get those visitors you would earn more money.

Think about it rationally – you could have a thousand visitors a day but if your web page isn’t doing its job properly, you’re not going to make much more money.

Getting people to your website is only a small portion of having a successful, money making website.

There are other factors at play when trying to earn money online. SEO is only one of those. The fact remains, you could be getting thousands of visitors a day and not selling a thing.

Your website could have top ranking and be the crappest website in the whole history of crap websites. You won’t sell anything.

And of course just to complicate things, the rules of how to optimize your web pages change more frequently than the weather.

Ok.

Now, this is exciting. This is that “trick” part – and it’s one of the only ways in which SEO is worth the time and the effort.

You don’t really need to know much about SEO to implement this.

Instead of using one keyword over and over again on your pages, and of course, possibly getting kicked out of the search engine ranks for doing it, the trick now is to use “long-tail” keywords.

I hear you saying, “What the hell is a ‘long-tail’ keyword???”.

Hold on, because I’m about to tell you.

A “long-tail” search is one in which a specific phrase (comprised of a few keywords) is used by a searcher to find what he’s looking for on a search engine.

Say, for instance, someone was searching for “gravy recipes”. That would probably bring back too many results and so the searcher would have to do more searching.

But, if this same person added the word “chicken” or “brown” to the other keywords “gravy recipes”, then they would get more specific results presented to them.

So, the phrase “chicken gravy recipes” is considered a “long-tail” search phrase.

What’s powerful about “long-tail” search phrases peppered throughout your web pages is that they will naturally rank higher in the search engines.

Naturally?

Yes. Meaning you won’t have to do any work to get your pages closer to the top bracket. It will do it all by itself without any extra effort from you!

The search engine does the SEO for you.

So, maybe it’s time you went back and tried slipping in a few extra specific keywords to give you that “long-tail” search string and boost your rank.

Be specific about what your website sells or does and you’ll naturally climb up the rankings. How it works is beyond me but it works.

So if you have a site about blogging, you could be on page 59 of the 34.7 million results that a search for ‘blogging’ produces.

And chances are that the person searching isn’t interested in your site because it about ‘blogging techniques for dolphin chefs’

But if you use the phrase ‘blogging techniques for dolphin chefs’ which is quite specific, you could well end up at position 1 for this particular search.

And just because it’s specific (a niche even) doesn’t mean that only a few people will be interested. You might be able to sell your book about blogging techniques for dolphin chefs to 1500 people.

And at $27 a go that’s not bad.

So if you’re going to use SEO use long tail keywords and let the SEO do the work on it’s own.

It’s easier and more effective that way!

What is your first thought when you think of this word?

A person living on the streets begging for money?

If you’re British you might think about arses.

Well offline either is a pretty good description

However when you think about ‘bums’ online there’s now only one thing it really means – BUM MARKETING.

Marketing “bums” are folks that elect to take the easy way to earning profits online. And here’s how the real bum marketers do it…

A Marketing “bum” will either write their own, or rewrite another author’s 300-800 word article in several places such as free article directories, or on their own web sites including blogs.

(In case you wondered blogs are a great place to post articles.)

But, within the articles, they tuck away a few different money making methods such as  Google Ads, affiliate links, and links to their own select web pages that are designed to sell ONE product at a time (any more than one product and most people get confused and leave the page)

Cleverly – all those little money-making methods are related to the topic discussed inside their article.

So for example an article on viral marketing would include a link to an affiliate product about viral marketing (if you buy it, the bum marketer would get maybe 50%).

The web page links in the article would link to another product on viral marketing – perhaps one actually written by the bum marketer.

The google ads displayed would also link to viral marketing products and the clever bums would also have an opt-in link to a ‘free viral marketing newsletter’ just in case you didn’t want to buy anything instantly so they can mail you later with offers.

What’s really cool about Marketing bums is the fact that they do next to nothing besides writing up short little articles and offering them for free to anyone and everyone who wants to read them, and still manage to make pretty good profits.

It’s the people who use their articles that do the work for them – they’re the ones who spread the articles, and therefore the reputation and LINKS of the bum marketer.

After the money starts to come in they can even outsource the article writing (paying $20 for an article to be written) so they don’t actually have to do ANY work themselves. Genius.

So, effectively they earn money from giving away free information. Beyond that, they also build up their reputation as a person of value to others by providing such valuable information for free.

It’s a win – win situation and that’s exactly why the gurus give out so many free reports.

It’s not because they’re nice people or want to help you with free info – IT’S BECAUSE THEY MAKE SO MUCH MONEY FROM DOING IT THEY’VE ABSOLUTELY NO DESIRE TO STOP.

Obviously this method isn’t “new”, but it IS a method that brings positive results to those who use it.

I often wonder how many people just don’t realize how powerful this method of making money is. We all pay lip service to bum marketing and how great it is, but who actually uses it?

Well I’ll tell you now I do.

Because it brings me tens of thousands of dollars a year.

Of course, everyone will earn a different amount.

Some will earn little. And some will earn a lot. It all depends on the effort you put in.

If you only release, or publish, a handful of articles sprinkled with your money making devices, then you can only expect to see a small return from your efforts.

They’re not like that. They may have made enough money but they want more. Much more.

Get hold of every ‘free’ bit of information issued by the gurus and study it carefully. Then copy the exact same method but use different information.

If they have a report about adsense that links to two websites and an affiliate program, write one about blogging that links to two websites and an affiliate program.

Put your links in the same places as they do – word the links the same. Look at the introduction, the way in which they distribute it, where they give it away for free etc and DO THE SAME with your subject.

It’s basically a master class on Bum Marketing provided free of charge for you by the guru.

Use it. Most people just look at the free material, maybe read it and that’s that.

FORGET the free material. Look at the method.

Copy it.

It could earn you a LOT of money.

That’s the secret they DON’T want to give away for free – without realizing it’s exactly what they ARE doing – you just have to know where to look to get it…and now I’ve just told you.

No.

Chances are, only a handful of people that buy your guide will ever put the information to ANY use. Sure, they’ll read it. Maybe even get excited enough to take a few baby steps towards beginning down their own money-making path. But very few people ever complete this process. You can’t fight human nature, which is quite a relief for us marketers!

Some clever marketers even give away their techniques for free, holding just one thing back – the TOOLS needed for the job.

Nothing wrong with this – it’s a standard marketing technique.

For example if you write a book about how to make $1,000 a week from your mailing list, and to undertake the process ALL the reader needs is some list-building software.

Guess who’s selling the list-building software for $200??

I don’t do this.

Not because I’m a nice guy, but because I realize that providing an excellent quality money making method will ensure that the next time I decide to reveal one of my secrets it’ll sell well because people trust me and know I deliver a decent product.

Which is my final point here. You don’t have to limit yourself to selling just ONE  “How I Make Money Online” product. Methods change or improve over time.  So long as you are still learning new methods you remain qualified to write another information product on the subject.

Once you find a genuine way to make money online, you’ll make MORE money selling the method of how to do it than you will using the techniques.

How to Start Generating Traffic?

All too often, a website does not get traffic simply because there are no real and reliable efforts carried out to do so. Sometimes, this is because of a lack of knowledge as to how to go about it, but most times, it is more due to the habit of overanalyzing the issue and not taking action.

What is constantly not realized is that even if the action taken is not perfect, some action is far better than no action at all.

Best advice as far as generating traffic is concerned is therefore to pick something, and stick with it. Then, once you’re done, pick something else and stick with that too. This way, at very least you’ll end up with a couple of well developed streams of traffic, which may not be perfect, but will still end up bringing in visitors.

Let’s look at some of the best sources of traffic that you should be tapping into:

1. Search Engines

When anyone is looking for something online, where is the first place that you think they’d head? That’s right – search engines.

For a long time now, search engines have been at the very heart of the internet experience, by being the navigation method of choice. All that has changed is the popularity of various search engines over the years, with Google currently dominating the pack by a king-sized margin.

With this in mind, it is reasonable to want to be getting your slice of the pie as far as search engine traffic is concerned, and how that can be done is simply by ensuring your pages start to show up within the first page (or at least, first few pages) of search engine results for terms of your choice.

These ‘terms’ are known as keywords, and they’re what form the brunt of how you can get targeted search engine traffic.

Basic Keyword Research

In order to find out what keywords to aim for, there is some research that needs to be done. Fortunately, it isn’t too complicated a process, but there are just a few concepts behind selecting ‘good’ keywords that should be discussed.

  • Search Volume

Basically, it is the amount of searches of the keyword you’re looking at, and is either measured as ‘searches per month’ or ‘searches per day’. It should go without saying that more searches is definitely better.

  • Competing Websites

For each keyword, there are bound to be at least some competing websites also targeting the same term (although, maybe not by purpose). Just searching for the keyword you’re looking at in Google will give you an idea of how many competing websites there are. If there aren’t many, then that’s great for the keyword.

So essentially, what you’re looking for is a high number of searches for a keyword with very little competition. One of the easiest keyword tools to get started with is Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

On top of that, to further narrow down keywords, there are the questions of how targeted it is, and also, how profitable. A targeted keyword is really just one that relates to the niche that you’re in fairly well, but profitability of a keyword is a completely different kettle of fish.

One of the most common ways that marketers measure profitability is to see if, when the keyword is searched for on Google, any advertisements appear. If they do, then chances are that it is a fairly profitable keyword.

The other way to do so is simply trial and error.

Based on these considerations, it should not be too difficult to come up with a reasonably sized list of ‘good’ keywords that can be used to target search engine traffic.

Creating Keyword Rich and SEO-d Content

Once you have a list of keywords, all that remains is to insert them into your content creation. Now, this does not mean you should ‘stuff’ them in as much as possible, because at the end of the day the traffic that you’re getting will be in the form of actual people, who probably won’t respond too well to illegible ‘stuffed’ keyword content.

Widely accepted by both search engines and people is the common 1% to 3% keyword density rule. All that means is that you should, for each keyword, have between 1 to 3 appearances per 100 words. If it is a particularly ‘long’ keyword, then limiting it to 1 or 2 is more than enough really.

Fairly effective as far as formulas go is the idea of having the presence of 1 ‘short’ keyword and 2 ‘long’ keywords per article or piece of content.

As soon as search engines latch on to these keywords, you’ll at very least have your website appearing in the right ‘target’ bracket. So, all that would remain is to actually start scaling the pages until you appear as close to the top of the search results as possible.

For SEO purposes, while meta-tags are largely unused nowadays, it still is a good idea to have them in there, just in case. Title tags and description tags in particular are important, with keyword tags of lesser value, but still occasionally relevant.

Realistically, it never hurts to cover as many bases as possible as far as SEO is concerned.

Importance of Backlinks

How you end up near the top of any search results actually ties in closely with the algorithm that search engines use to ‘rank’ websites. Different search engines would do this differently of course, but it is only logical to focus first on the largest and most widely-used search engine of them all: Google.

Far as Google goes, there is one thing that has been proven to affect search engine rankings, and that is actual links by other third-party websites to your own, which are called ‘backlinks’.

For all purposes and effects, these ‘backlinks’ are counted as ‘votes’ regarding the quality of your website, and is based on the logic that the more websites that are actually linking too you, the better your website must be.

Due to this, one of the ways to start scaling search engine results is to start building up a reliable base of backlinks. Admittedly, the ‘quality’ of those backlinks does count too, and link-exchanges do not tend to work anywhere near as well as a backlink from a high authority (and high Page Ranked) website.

Note: Page Rank is basically a quantity, between 0 and 10, which Google assigns to websites based on how ‘good’ its algorithm thinks they are.

Later on, we’ll talk about social bookmarking, but at this juncture it should be enough to note that social bookmarking is one way to get backlinks. Similarly directories are too, as are forums and blog commenting.

We’ll be discussing the latter two a bit later on too. But for now, that should suffice.

Warning: Do not build backlinks ‘too fast’ or Google could latch onto your website and penalize you. Backlink building is fine, but ‘spam’ is not, and if you’re getting 1000 new backlinks in a short span of time, it could end up being flagged.

2. Social Bookmarking and Social Networks

Commonly known as ‘Web 2.0’ promotion, social bookmarking and social networks form a new type of promotion that has rapidly gained ground. Previously, it was mentioned that these represented a valuable source of backlinks, and that much is certainly true.

However, apart from the backlinks that come as part and parcel of marketing efforts involving these websites, there is also the additional possibility of receiving traffic through those backlinks. After all, if there is an interesting bookmark that draws the attention of the crowds of people who flock to social websites, then there will probably be a correspondingly high amount of visitors who want to know more.

Despite this, there are two things that one should be aware of regarding social bookmarking, and social networks:

  • Not every piece of content is going to do well in social bookmarking websites. For the most part, the content that does do well when social bookmarked is those that are deemed to be ‘fresh’, ‘hip’, expertly informative, or even controversial.
  • Research has shown that traffic from social bookmarking websites tends to have a very high ‘bounce rate’. What this means is that very few visitors that come in through social bookmarks will actually end up staying around long enough to browse your website.
  • Some social bookmarking websites are very niche specific, so finding those in your niche could presumably not only increase the value of the backlinks obtained, but also allow you to do much better due to the relevancy and automatic targeting of traffic.

Being a relatively easy and painless way to gain backlinks, and also build up yet another traffic stream, social bookmarking is certainly worthwhile.

3. Article Marketing

Another easy way of gaining both backlinks and traffic, article marketing is more powerful than many first realize. In fact, some people use it solely for the backlink value, and by doing so, are ignoring a potentially incredible source of extremely targeted traffic.

On the whole, the entire process of article marketing could be summed up by describing it as writing an article, and submitting it to article directories. By including a link of your choice in the ‘resource box’, you will be gaining back links.

However, if it is to be a true source of traffic, then there is much more to the process than simply that. Firstly, the article must be keyword targeted, just like your content, in order to enable people to find it.

Apart from that, the article itself must be a ‘presell’ of your website, albeit in a non-promotional way. Good articles for submission are those that relate to the content of your website, and guide the reader to the resource box which would contain a call to action.

It is here that the article culminates its usefulness, and the call to action should be convincing, and supply the reader with a good reason to want to visit your website.

Note: To further get readers to visit your article, some basic promotion of it through social bookmarking, could help it rank higher and thus increase the traffic flow.

One argument regarding article marketing is that it is a ‘short term’ solution, which basically requires you to submit content to a third party website as opposed to building up your own. While this is very true, at the same time, it is a way that you can tap into the already-high page rank and reputation of article directories.

What you end up with is a high-up search result that basically advertises your website, which is not too shabby at all.

4. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising

Speaking of advertising, yet another great way to gain traffic is to advertise. Through PPC advertising, whereby you only actually pay when your advertisement is clicked, you end up essentially paying per visitor.

As far as value for money goes, this would seem to be a no brainer.

Running a PPC campaign however, is slightly more involved than it sounds. Where there is high competition for a certain keyword, you’re going to need to pay more per click for your advertisement to appear often. Thus, it boils down to a question of keyword research again, and finding targeted, but low-competition keywords which you can then exploit.

Properly carried out, this is one of the easiest ways to gain traffic quickly, though admittedly, you do have to pay for it.

5. Forums

For almost every niche, there are forums around online where people would flock to discuss the issues that surround it. Naturally, this represents a base of potential traffic that you could tap into, but the question that should be asked is, “How?”

Obtaining traffic from a forum can sometimes be a long process. Most good forums tend to have been established, and you will have to establish yourself within the forum so that the others there view you as an important and trusted contributor.

If you can accomplish this, then your suggestions are bound to be taken more seriously, as will your links.

Before you get to this level though, you can always start off by including a link in your signature, as is the generally accepted practice with most forums. Be sure to read and abide by the forum’s rules though, the last thing you want to happen is that you end up getting banned for some offence that you did not realize was an offence.

Who knows, once you are very reputable, you could end up tapping into a huge stream of traffic from a forum.

6. Blog Commenting

Quite frankly, this has fairly similar characteristics as forum posting, but in most blogs there is no real need to build up a reputation. Just find blogs in your niche that welcome commenting, and are not opposed to having backlinks posted, and comment away.

Be sure that your comments and links are relevant though, else chances are that the moderators will act swiftly to remove them.
